CONNECT is an exhibition prompted by the theme of “communication” where artists created small prints with a variety of “messaging,” “news,” or whatever they wanted to “post.” People around the world have been plunged into communicating through technology. Internet and cellphone communication have become lifelines for staying connected to family and friends or for virtually gathering on momentous occasions. This traveling show by Boston Printmakers presents the best in contemporary, traditional, and experimental printmaking, from members across North America. This collection of prints captures the creativity of artists and documents a global spirit of togetherness through communication. All prints are 8 x 10 inches or smaller (matted or mounted on 8 x 10-inch board). They may seem small in size, but the images are powerful, intriguing, and technically accomplished.

ABOUT THE BOSTON PRINTMAKERS:

The Boston Printmakers, founded in 1947 by a small group of energetic students, is an international, professional print alliance based in Boston. It offers the best of contemporary print media, supporting traditional print techniques as well as promoting printmaking in the expanded field of installation, performance, and time-based media. Interfacing with digital media, prints are well-positioned to play a cultural role in promoting justice and equity. The Boston Printmakers promotes public knowledge and understanding; it supports printmaking as both a traditional practice and an interdisciplinary field.

The Boston Printmakers is a North American print alliance with a juried membership of over 300 seasoned and emerging printmakers. Founded in 1947 by a small group of students and faculty at the Boston Museum School and the Massachusetts College of Art, its membership soon included not just local artists but those from across the country and around the world. The organization flourished during the postwar period, and today its Print Biennial is one of the longest-running and most influential printmaking exhibitions in existence. One of the premier American printmaking organizations of the twentieth century, The Boston Printmakers’ history was recently documented by David Acton in the book SIXTY YEARS OF NORTH AMERICAN PRINTS. This publication is a catalog of the sixtieth-anniversary exhibition of Boston Printmakers and contains a narrative history of the organization and of printmaking in North America (available through www.bostonprintmakers.org).
