The literal translation for the French phrase “Entre Chien et Loup” is Between Dog and Wolf. A French linguist would describe this as that time of day when the light is such that is becomes difficult to distinguish between a dog and a wolf, between friend and foe, between known and unknown. In many translations, it is interpreted as the more ambiguous times of day more commonly known as dawn, dusk or twilight. Figuratively, in that time between the dog and the wolf, we cannot always know whether we are safe or threatened. We might feel deceived by our eyes and question if we truly know what we think we know. We can feel caught somewhere between comfort and fear, between what is real and unreal.
