The Stamford Mayor’s Gallery presents “Moments and Memories”: Paintings inspired by reflections of Motherhood by Sarah King at The Mayor’s Gallery of Stamford. The exhibition runs from May 8th thru July 5th, 2023. The artist’s reception is scheduled for May 18th, from 5:00-6:30 PM where the public is invited to meet the artist.
For Stamford artist Sarah King memory has become the driving force in her artwork since the onset of the pandemic. She became to ask herself if there is a difference between a memory and a moment. She asked herself, “How could I paint both a moment and a memory? How could I decipher between them? Through color? Through tone? Through the image?” I experimented and played and found more strands of a familiar theme- motherhood- yet reflected on me. This is how I see my mother right now as her child and as an adult and mother myself. This series of work is based on these initial questions.”
Stamford artist Sarah King balances raising two young children with an active studio practice, teaching preschool art at the Sarah Walker Nursery School at the JCC, and actively volunteering in the community. She was awarded the distinguished Kerry Fellowship for 2023 at the Norwalk Art Space where she curated exhibitions, mentored high school art students, and offered workshops and educational opportunities to the community and youth.
The Mayor’s Gallery is located on the 10th floor of Stamford’s Government Center. The City of Stamford gives area artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in this space. There are six exhibitions annually featuring emerging and professional artists. Please get in touch with curator Ellen Gordon at esgordon@optonline.net to view the exhibit on weekdays 9 am – 4 pm.
