Sound performance with Akinori Matsumoto and guest artist Michael Pestel

Akinori Matsumoto Sound Garden is a site-specific multidimensional sound and shadow art installation, curated by Francene Langford and Dianne Niklaus.

As we celebrate Asian Heritage Month, the artist invites us to experience a uniquely Asian sensibility and expression through his transportive creations. The exhibition features a delightful menagerie of handmade ‘sound objects’ hung within a setting of locally-sourced native plants including donated bamboo stalks from Sleepy Cat Farm and heirloom fruit tree branches from the grounds of the Greenwich Historical Society.

The play of light and shadow is a central theme in Matsumoto’s current work, as he combines elements of music, theater, and art to create an immersive and enchanting audio-visual environment. With a career spanning over four decades, Matsumoto boasts an extensive resume of exhibitions and collections in his native Japan and throughout Asia in festivals, galleries, and museums, and is the recipient of numerous grants and awards.
