The Carriage Barn Arts Center, home of the New Canaan Society for the Arts will host an exhibit for The New York Society of Women Artists, a group of professional women painters and sculptors. The artists share a love for the emotive, symbolic and psychological aspects of color, with points of view that range from the recognizable to full dynamic abstraction. NYSWA artists draw inspiration from their precursors such as Gabriel Munter, Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia O’Keefe and Lee Krasner, among others, to bring life and energy to visual form. NYSWA artists, each with her own professional history, have joined together to create exciting theme exhibitions. The organization, founded in 1925 provided support, comradery and exhibition opportunities for women professionals in a field long dominated by men.
Many of the artists separate color from its descriptive representational purpose and allow it to exist on the surface as an independent element. Whether seeking simplicity, complexity, clarity, balance or discord, mood or description, color plays a vital pivotal role in each visual artist’s thinking. “The Primacy of Color III” at the Carriage Barn Arts Center, 681 South Avenue, New Canaan, CT 06840, runs from June 3, through June 23, 2017. Gallery hours are Wednesdays-Saturdays, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM and Sundays, 1:00 – 5:00 PM., phone: 203-972-1895.
