Bharatanatyam is an ancient yet popular classical dance of India that reflects the culture of India at its best. Bharatanatyam can be considered an artistic Yoga. Natya (dance) is a Sampoorna (complete) yoga as it activates all senses.
(Bharatanatyam is a 3000-year-old dance form and the most popular of all classical styles of India. )It has two aspects: nritta, or pure dance, and abhinaya, or mime. It is a very structured and precise dance where huge repertoires of hand movements are used to convey story and expression. Bharatanatyam is well known for its rhythmic, vigorous footwork, crisp movements, sculpture-like poses, diverse upper body movements, and theatrical facial expressions.
Liza Joseph is the Director of Natyamudra School of Dance based in Westchester, New York. She has taught Bharatanatyam and other traditional dances to children and adults in the Tristate area for the past 22 years.
