FLUID TERRAIN is the captivatingly apt title of Flinn Gallery’s fourth show of the season. It features works by three women artists whose inspiration virtually flows from nature. Although their artwork is abstract, suggestions of land, sky, and seascapes are inevitable. Laura Fayer, Amy Genser, and Suzan Shutan use paper and paint to present interpretations of the natural world.

Laura Fayer embraces the imperfections and the accidental relationships that evolve among multiple layers of paint and graphic marks. She starts with pools of color that blend and disperse into the canvas. These large areas are then layered with collaged printed marks from a vocabulary of handmade printmaking tools

Amy Genser plays with paper and paint to explore her obsession with texture, pattern, and color. Evocative of natural forms and organic processes, her work is simultaneously irregular and ordered. She uses paper as pigment and constructs her pieces by layering, cutting, rolling, and combining paper.

Suzan Shutan’s work straddles the worlds of two and three dimensions. Driven by materials that are manufactured and handmade, she repurposes and transforms them. Much of her work offers maplike views of “systems” found in the natural world.
